Really fascinating eye-tracking study on Google.com vs. Google.cn and on Baidu vs. Google search in China. One main reason for the difference (on .com vs .cn) is due to the difficulty in scanning Chinese characters.
For Baidu vs. Google, the difference is due to the quality of search results. The article reads: “Based on North American standards, Google should present a better user experience.” It’s truly amazing how difficult it is to win the Chinese over.
