  I went on a hike with my dad today to the Hollywood sign.  It’s really disorienting to see something up close that you’ve seen so many times at a distance.  We got talking about how some of the most familiar/iconic things have odd/semi-accidental histories:  the HOLLYWOOD sign was originally built to promote the HOLLYWOODLAND housing development that was being built just below the mountain — the ‘LAND’ was eventually removed, and the remaining letters have all been replaced several times since (the sign’s caretaker once got drunk and drove his car though the H).  There’s an old photo of the original sign in the set above.
