It may be wrong for me to think/write this considering my job is advocating sustainable transportation options, but I am fucking tired of hearing about “green” solutions/products/living/design/etc. It hit me last week when I was running a kiosk and bike valet service at a Sustainable Consumer Expo. I know that real change will only occur when it makes economic sense for businesses and consumers, we are a cheap, greedy, self-important bunch who will not change just because it’s the “right thing to do”.
Here’s my real organic beef though: If you are living a more sustainable life, if you make a conscious effort to buy “green” and organic, and local, and whatever buzz word your glossy lifestyle magazine told you to… shut the fuck up about it. No one needs to hear about. Don’t act like you invented the idea, just do it. I believe in a better future, hell, I am making a living running programs to try and achieve that goal. But this smugness is becoming so suffocating that I might need to get away. Get some fresh air. Into nature. The wilderness. Driving a fucking Hummer.
