These are the pictures I take. This is my email. Here's my Facebook. And for better or worse, I occasionally use Twitter.

personal web presence

Personal web presence, increasingly, is created and mediated by third-parties outside of individuals’ control.  Many people don’t know (or care) what Google returns when you search for “their name,” but this stuff matters.  Your potential employer will look at it when you apply for a job, and the admissions office will look when you apply to college.

If people haven’t yet abandoned their notions of privacy on the web, they ought’ve a long time ago: your Facebook photos from that night your Freshman year are out there forever — your hasty Twitter comments, too.  Pretty soon it’s going to become really important for people to play an active role in maintaining their web presence — you can’t erase the pictures of yourself doing keg-stands, but make sure people find your website or blog first.

I think there’s a chance for someone to get this right early on and build some tools to give people the opportunity to put their best foot forward on the web…
